Yogi adventures: The beginning

October 07, 2016

Ubud is a small place of no more than 30,000 inhabitants. Despite its small size, it has become the cultural center of Bali, to a large part thanks to the westerners who started teaching dance and art to the Balinese.

Yoga and spirituality play a big role in the character of Ubud, too. The number of big yoga studios in town has risen to five, and not only do people who come to Ubud try yoga, but some dedicated yogis come to Ubud because of it. And many of those end up at The Yoga Barn, the most popular yoga studio in town.

The Yoga Barn
Even though I was skeptical at first, I understood the hype immediately after stepping foot onto the area. The studio is huge - there are several rooms indoors, a huge place outdoors, they have a cafe (aptly called Kafe), showers, chilling area, and more. Its architecture is beautiful and it definitely has a significant wow factor.

However, the class that Anna, Viivi and I went to was not exactly what I imagined it to be. The air conditioning was strangely off, and for the whole class of around 70 people, there were two little windows open. Even before the start of the class, I saw how sweat from the previous class had condensed into tiny droplets of water running down the windows. During the whole practice, I had to pay all my attention to not slide off of my mat, rather than to my breathing and movement. But the class itself was rather pleasant and pretty challenging. Enough so to give me some proper soreness in my body the next morning.

But I was not so convinced, and I tried another yoga studio the next day. And found everything I was looking for.
